The Future of Hydrogen Technologies is Here
Our Journey into Hydrogen Technologies
Achieving the ambitious net zero carbon goals needed to combat climate change requires significant emissions reduction in hard-to-abate end markets. Low-carbon hydrogen represents a viable solution that can lower carbon emissions across refining, chemical, steel, heavy-duty transport and other sectors.
At John Crane, we believe that all sources of low-carbon hydrogen production should be deployed. This includes hydrogen produced through electrolysis powered by renewables and nuclear energy, and also through traditional natural gas reforming technologies retrofitted with carbon capture solutions.
However, producing hydrogen is not enough. Investing in infrastructure that transports hydrogen (and alternative energy carriers such as ammonia) is critical to the successful build-out of the ecosystem. New enabling technologies are paramount to make this happen. That is why at John Crane, we are making important investments into new hydrogen sealing, filtration, digital solutions and services technologies to support the industry in achieving its ambitious hydrogen roadmaps.
Market Leader in Hydrogen Sealing Technologies
Proven Hydrogen Experience
John Crane produced the first hydrogen gas seal in 1979, and we have since supplied more than 3,500 dry gas seal units into various hydrogen applications in refining and chemical facilities.
Broad Portfolio Range
Our portfolio consists of a wide range of enabling technologies, including gas and wet seals, systems, filtration and couplings for hydrogen, ammonia and methanol applications.
Investing in New Technologies
Compressing and filtering hydrogen is much more challenging than other gases. We are actively investing in new designs and advanced materials for higher speed applications such as in hydrogen pipelines and liquefaction.
Proven Hydrogen Experience
We are a market leader in enabling hydrogen technologies
We have more than 40 years of proven experience in sealing hydrogen in refining, pipeline and chemical applications
More than 5,000 seals, filters, couplings and systems installed today in hydrogen applications

Blue Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Technologies
Enabling Canada’s Largest Blue Hydrogen Facility
John Crane was selected to provide sealing technologies for one of the world’s largest blue hydrogen production sites located in Alberta, Canada. The project demonstrated blue hydrogen and carbon capture technologies from the facility’s steam methane reformer units. The site is now capturing up to ~1.2 million tonnes (Mt) per year of carbon dioxide, which is then transported and permanently stored over two kilometers below the earth’s surface in a deep saline aquifer.
Seal Performance Delivered Reliability in Hydrogen Applications
Since becoming operational in 2015, John Crane’s pump seals and seal support systems provided have operated in line with expectations and have consistently delivered a high Mean Time Between Repair (MTBR). This enables reliable and clean operations for the end user.Learn more
