John Crane Launches Next-Generation Mechanical Split Seal

Chicago, Ill (2 June, 2014) – John Crane introduces its larger, next-generation mechanical split seal: Type 3740XL. The original Type 3740 split seal was introduced in 2009, with thousands now in use around the world. The 3740 seal is also qualified for use on U.S. Navy ships. The new, larger “XL” model is ideal for large, difficult to maintain pumps, mixers and rotating equipment commonly found in power generation plants, waste water plants, desalination plants, pulp and paper mills, and mines.

Split seal technology is unique because it can be installed without dismantling the equipment, making it easier for customers to install than a conventional seal. This can potentially reduce installation time by more than 50% in challenging operating environments, reducing costs for customers by saving time, as well as reducing ongoing maintenance costs.

Duncan Gillis, John Crane’s President and CEO, said: “We continue to focus our new product development efforts on products and services that will meet customer needs. Demand for energy consumption is expected to increase by more than 35 percent by 2030, putting our energy services customers under pressure to deliver high-performance solutions. With more than 230 sales and service facilities worldwide and a complete portfolio of high-quality technologies available, we are in a unique position to help prepare the industry for opportunities ahead.”

John Donatiello, John Crane’s Vice President of Global End User Sales and Service, said: “Expanding our product portfolio with the Type 3740XL split seal will help us better serve the needs of our customers because it can be used on large equipment that is typically more challenging to maintain, helping to reduce change-out times considerably. There will be more opportunity for us to bid on new contracts and also increase our presence in emerging industries such as desalination plants.”
