Angela Ruiz
Angela Ruiz, Product Line Strategy Manager, joined John Crane in 2019 and works in Berlin, Germany.
Angela is responsible for supporting strategic planning for Portfolio and Market Directors and the new product development process. She also assists other teams on temporary assignments, like the Hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) team and Corporate Strategy.
Angela received a bachelor’s degree in financial engineering from Piloto University in Bogota, Colombia. Financial engineering is a mix of economics, risk and portfolio management, and financial planning.
“My role involves a lot of communication and I strive to be respectful by using inclusive language, being mindful of the impact of my words and providing safe spaces for open conversations,” Angela shared. “The Smiths Way values are very aligned with my top personal values, which makes it easy for me to make them part of my day-to-day.”
She started her career in 2011 working in business intelligence. At that time, Angela was working as a Purchasing Assistant and later accepted a role in business intelligence. Angela said, “Thanks to that opportunity, I found a career path I would've never thought of—full of fun and growth. At 21, I ran a function for three countries. I've worked in various industries, including technology and SaaS, which allowed me to come to Europe to work at the headquarters of one of the world’s oldest companies. Three years ago, I decided it was time for a change because I enjoyed working on small strategic initiatives rather than analytics. That change led me to John Crane, and the rest is history.”
Angela was drawn to John Crane’s portfolio of work across multiple industries and is fascinated by the engineering products involved in industrial processes that impact our daily lives.
“John Crane provides opportunities for career development and growth,” Angela said. “In just three years, I've learned more than in the rest of my career. This experience is thanks to the great people I work with, plus the ones who have offered time for mentoring.”
In her free time, she enjoys cooking and perfecting recipes that she tried while traveling. She loves to visit Colombia and spend time with her family. New Year’s celebrations are a big event for her family, including an annual soccer game. Angela also likes to help young people with career and immigration advice.
Angela shared some of the best advice she has ever been given, “One of my managers gave me enough advice to write a book. What stuck with me the most was from a book called ‘The Four Agreements’: Be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions and always do your best. My manager also taught me to write down what I want and read it a few years later. It is a great exercise to foster focus and gratitude.”
